Bartlett in it to win!

While I may be an underdog, winners aren't decided by conventional wisdom, as the 2004 Red Sox proved to the Yankees! I am not running for Governor as a "politics as usual" candidate.

    Stable, Affordable Electricity

As Governor, I would make efficiency and conservation a number one priority. This combined with investments in renewable energy would help move Vermont towards an affordable and environmentally efficient energy future.

    Seven Days Profile

Vermonters want a centrist in the governor's office, she reasons, and after eight years of Republican Governor Jim Douglas, voters are ready to give a Democrat a chance. She says her Democratic rivals are too liberal to beat Dubie, the lieutenant governor.

    Innovation and Intellectual Property

When you run for higher office, or any office for that matter, part of the campaign promise is, "I'll work for better, more, green, whatever ... jobs." Well, who could be opposed to that idea?

The real question is, what will the next governor do to actually help make that promise a reality? What's the vision or the plan to make this happen? Fair question, here's my vision and my answer.

Community Justice Program: Proven Results and a Wise Investment

We will save a projected $442,000 in correctional costs by spending $140,000 in general funds. This is a small price to pay for keeping kids out of the corrections system. I would love to see this program go statewide.

  • Change is Scary

The challenge when considering "Challenges for Change" is to stay calm and keep an open mind. The important things to consider are the outcomes, not the administration's ideas for how to get there. Challenges for Change is designed to eliminate drive-by budgeting and blind cuts.
The administration's current proposal throws good programs under the bus.

  • 'Vermont Health Care for All' Endorses S.88 Changes

"Last week a lot of work was done to S.88 and ... we are endorsing the version put out by the Senate Appropriations Committee, version 1.6." - Dr. Deb Richter & the Vermont for Single Payer Team
The Senate passed the bill 28-2 on April 7.

  • The Truth About Burton

Burton is not leaving. They are consolidating their manufacturing in Austria and China, a move that will cost us 43 jobs. Jon Margolis wrote an excellent analysis that is available at Vermont News Guy. Burton will keep their corporate headquarters and their research and development operations in Vermont. They are going to expand their research and development operations to take advantage of the research and development tax credits Susan has championed.

  • Saving Money and Improving Education

Susan's experience as a special educator and on the Senate Appropriations Committee qualifies her as an expert on this complicated issue. Vermont must reduce spending statewide in order to reduce local school taxes. We can control spending and enhance educational opportunity in Vermont through larger school districts; a critical evaluation of special education; and minimum-maximum class sizes. It is also time to scrap the CLA in favor or a system with a statewide, three-year rotating professional appraisal. Read about the history of education spending and changes that should be made; the successes and problems of our education system; and her qualifications for dealing with an issue that is of paramount importance to Vermont.

  • Global Budgeting for Hospitals

About 40 percent of Vermont insurance money goes to hospitals. Susan would have insurance companies pay that money instead to the state government, which would pay hospitals directly. It is a major step toward containing the costs of health care.
"The measure is a sort of quasi-single-payer health-care system, where the state acts as a conduit between insurance companies and hospitals."

  • Susan Votes for 800 New Jobs

The Vermont Emergency Board voted to increase the cap on the Vermont Employment Growth Incentive (VEGI) program.
"These are performance based incentives ... until the company has created the jobs, the jobs have been filled and folks have been working for a specific time period, the incentive is not paid."

    The Vermont Yankee Vote

"This vote is not an act of courage. Education Reform was an act of courage. Civil Unions was an act of courage. Equal Marriage was an act of courage. This is a no-brainer."

People seem to be confused about my Senate vote on Vermont Yankee. Some say that I changed my mind. I have not changed my mind.

I felt the vote was held too soon, but I felt it was important the Senate speak clearly even if too quickly.

I have consistently said that I have not found one good reason to support re-licensing the plant. The concerns about safety and reliability multiply every day. Based on the knowledge I have now I cannot support re-licensing.

  • My campaign is about policy, community, and vision. I will focus on restoring Vermont for all Vermonters, a Vermont that reflects the values of hard work, caring for our families, neighbors, and communities.

For the past 7 years Vermont has bounced from slogan to slogan, ribbon cutting to ribbon cutting, without a vision or a plan. This cannot continue.

Over the next few years it will be important to help business create jobs in Vermont. We need to lower the cost of health care and insurance, improve education and support social services while exercising fiscal restraint. It is a tough job. I am running for Governor because my experience, relationships and deep understanding of the problems we face in Vermont are what we need to face the challenges ahead. If you do your part to help me win the coming elections, I'll do my part to lead Vermont to a bright future based on the values we share.
